The Problem: Why the Infinity Grades are needed.
In 2022, Infinity Grades enter into initial development because of the need to over-expose S-Log 3 by +3 stop of light while. properly monitoring my image. However, the most noticeable conflict in the sony community is the mass uncertainty of how to properly expose without compromising image quality. No trustworthy monitoring LUT solution existed for a new Sony Cine user that would condition "exposing to the right" while also displaying a beautiful image on the back of the screen. If decent monitoring LUTS were available, they would never fully convert the image properly when applied in post-production. So the older way of doing things was to use a monitoring LUT, a conversion LUT, and a finishing LUT. However, I knew there is a better and faster way to use only one LUT to monitor, convert, and even bake into the image while maintaining perfect color clarity. A quicker more reliable method of getting the perfect exposure in camera and in post-production.
The Solution: What the Infinity Grades are for.
The Infinity Grades is a collection of 7 unique LUTS that were hand-crafted in DaVinci Resolve Studio to reproduce a theatrical highlight roll similar to the Arri Alexa. Monitor exposure on your Sony FX3 with one of our Infinity Grades and then convert that same footage with the same LUT. Adjust the white balance, tweak additional exposure if you missed it, and you're done. A true one-click solution.
The Creation: How the Infinity Grades were forged.
Our testing and research phase resulted in a total of 125 field testing hours and 72 post-production hours. The time invested into developing the Infinity Grades was allocated toward testing exposure, underexposure, and overexposure, and then testing each exposure all over again in combination with pro mist and neutral density filters. This is because effect filters and exposure filters will often reduce overall image contrast, shift important color tones and ultimately lead to inconsistent camera monitoring routines. If we are to produce one LUT to rule them all, then mist filters should not impact the integrity or reliability of the LUT during monitoring. The way we accomplished this mighty task was due in part to all the resources Arri provided in reference to their "Log C" exposure curve. The first step was to meticulously replicate an identical Arri Alexa curve while also reducing overall exposure by +3 stop of light. Then came reproducing the color clarity associated with the Arri Alexa cameras. Close to 200 hours after testing saturation curves, hue curves, luma curves, shadows, highlights, mid-tones, skin tones, and exposure levels, out of the smoke emerged a legacy of Infinity Grades.
The Summary:
